A view from the left with John McDonnell MP

As part of our U+I Think series of events, this morning we hosted John McDonnell MP, Shadow Chancellor for the Labour party who shared Labour’s vision for economic prosperity and called for a ‘renaissance’ in the way that the Government and developers work together.

John began by explaining that Labour is seeking expert advice from world class economists such as Joseph Stiglitz and Thomas Piketty on how best to develop economic policies for the long-term future of the UK.

His message was clear: Labour wants to hear new ideas from the property sector, ideas that build creativity into the way local and national government work with the development sector to address the housing crisis and which work towards economic prosperity for all. This has never been more critical in the context of the housing crisis faced in his constituency of Hayes and Harlington, London and the wider UK, which he called “morally reprehensible” and “the worst seen in two or three generations”.

John announced plans to set up a parliamentary working group with developers, stating that it was an “opportunity for the Labour party to start listening again and engaging in a more thorough way than we’ve ever done before.”

He concluded: “we’re desperate for ideas, we’re desperate to harness the creativity of our population, of our communities.”

The Old Vinyl Factory, U+I’s mixed-use regeneration project Hayes was held up by John as a “great example of a positive mixed-use development that has truly integrated different uses on the site”. John had campaigned for the redevelopment of this historic, 17-acre site for almost 30 years. He  praised U+I’s approach to regeneration - listening to residents’ opinions and needs, and working towards creative solutions to deliver a genuine place that is integrated and inclusive to its residents and occupiers.
